UP TO 10X THE LIFE OF BRONZE BUSHINGS

THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING

We have said for many years that Vesconite bushings last up to ten times longer than bronze. But, since the proof is in the pudding, we have conducted in-house tests to prove this. We have found that Vesconite outperforms bronze, particularly when bronze is ungreased.

Even when bronze is greased, Vesconite without greasing gives much better results than bronze with grease. Yes, Vesconite with no grease lasts longer than bronze with grease.

LONG LASTING IN IN-HOUSE TESTS

TESTING BRONZE WITH GREASE

With greasing in our test, bronze performs well with continuous use. But only for three hours of operation.

At three hours, the bronze coefficient of friction increases significantly, and grease needs to be reapplied.

With greased bronze bearings, friction forces become significant with time and wear is pronounced.

TESTING BRONZE WITHOUT GREASE

In in-house testing with no grease, the co-efficient of friction of the bronze increases dramatically until one hour has passed. After five hours of continuous use, bronze fails.

Our bronze test samples also show considerable wear and deformation.

THE ISSUE OF GREASING

Vesconite has a largely steady co-efficient of friction when it is ungreased.

A single application of grease reduces Vesconite’s coefficient of friction and increases its life. Again the coefficient of friction, at this lower level, is largely steady.

Since Vesconite is internally lubricated, unlike bronze, it does not need additional greasing in most applications. This saves on time, labour and greasing costs.

Self-lubrication also makes Vesconite bearing materials suitable for outdoor environments in which greasing is irregular or where grease is quickly washed off.

Vesconite bearing materials are also suited to oscillating applications, such as grabs, where the grease may not be spread if the oscillations are minimal.

LONG LASTING IN CLIENT TESTS

Want more information on Vesconite’s longevity in independent tests? In one client test, Vesconite showed no appreciable wear in test conditions.

In another client test, Vesconite showed 35% less wear when compared to phosphor bronze.

CASE STUDIES - SHIFTING FROM BRONZE TO VESCONITE

A leading civil and infrastructure engineering contractor installed Vesconite Hilube wear-resistant U-shaped wear pads on graders in Nigeria. The company found the wear pads operated well with some chiselling wear on the shorter edge of the U-shaped pad after 535 hours of use. The wear pads acted as guides that…
Vesconite bushings were fitted to an eight-cubic-metre, multi-purpose grab used to offload ships in Durban ‑ the port that handles the greatest volume of sea-going traffic of any port in southern Africa. The grab operated under conditions of high ambient temperatures, high humidity and dirt. It was in use 22 hours daily…
A 54%-per-component saving has been realised by Powerworks following the replacement of bronze bushings with a Vesconite low-friction bearings in the Jetstream turbine starters. This is according to Powerworks Manufacturing Manager Philip van den Hoeck, who was responsible for the initiative to replace the bushing located inside a drive spindle…
An independent test has shown that a Vesconite left-hand torque-plate bushing, made from a no-grease hard-wearing engineered polymer, shows 35% less wear than a phosphor bronze right-hand torque-plate bushing of a similar design after one year of being exposed to abrasive material. The test was carried out by a large…
If you thought you had to get your endorphin fix in a sweaty indoor environment filled with unsightly Lycra, think again. The outdoor gym craze has finally hit South Africa, with increasingly sophisticated gym park equipment popping up in trendy urban hotspots. And, with this new fitness phenomenon comes specialised…
Equipment operators, lube technicians and maintenance engineers are no strangers to the time-consuming task of re-greasing bushings. Despite the availability of some automated greasing systems, much of the world’s lubrication is still carried out manually, one grease point at a time. Each grease point takes between three and five minutes…
The leading global copper producer has achieved exceptional results through the implementation of Vesconite Hilube wear-resistant bushings on load haul dump machines (LHDs). Departing from traditional bronze bushings, the mining company’s adoption of Vesconite Hilube on Sandvik and Caterpillar LHD booms has led to an unprecedented increase in bushing lifespan,…
A supplier of premium products and services to the oil and gas service industry has made repeat purchases of Vesconite Hilube bushings for Roper gear pumps, following the successful in-field performance of the bushings on the pumps’ drive and the driven (idler) gear shafts. The company initially tested Vesconite Hilube…
A San Diego hydro-electric plant has been operating with Vesconite Hilube wicket gate bushings since August 2022. Hollow bar for the bushings was ordered from Vesconite Bearings’ warehouse in Richmond, Virginia, by a Washington State hydro company that specialises in servicing and overhauling older hydro-electric turbines. The Washington company machined…
A large winery in South Africa, processing 1,000 tonnes of grapes per day, has successfully tested Vesconite flanged bushings in its Pera H-series destemmers. These bushings replaced traditional bronze bushings, which required daily greasing and suffered from rapid wear, leading to increased maintenance demands and potential downtime. Seeking a more…
Vesconite Hilube bushings continue to demonstrate their reliability on the inspection doors of the open-hopper bulk wagons of a UK-based freight operator. The operator, seeking a durable and low-maintenance solution, initially installed the no-swell wear-resistant bushings in November 2023 as part of a test on one set of wagon doors.…
A Vesconite thrust washer has outlasted bronze on a Bucher CM50 grinding machine at a large fruit juice concentrate producer. Reports received from the producer were that the Vesconite washer operated into three seasons and showed no signs of wear, in contrast to the bronze, which lasted only two seasons.…
One of the earliest industrial milestones that expanded Vesconite Bearings’ reach beyond mining and marine applications was its successful installation at the Goodyear South African tyre plant in Kariega, formerly Uitenhage. By the early 1980s, low-friction wear-resistant Vesconite Bearings had already earned a growing reputation in deep-level mining and marine…
Companies can significantly reduce their staffing costs associated with machine greasing by transitioning to Vesconite’s low-maintenance bearing solutions. This is according to Vesconite Bearings technical consultant Eddie Swanepoel, who conducted a greasing cost analysis for a South African client with a large machine fleet. Greasing costs can quickly escalate in…
Hydro turbine bearing components machined from Vesconite Hilube have been installed at the Crai Water Turbine and Pollok Sawmill Projects in Wales and Scotland. The UK consultant on hydro-electric turbine design and maintenance on the project had first come to hear about Vesconite bearing materials in 2021, when the restoration…
