Vesconite Bearings among South Africa’s most innovative companies
28 November 2025

Vesconite Bearings has been recognised as a finalist for the Most Innovative Company Award at the SEIFSA Awards for Excellence. The recognition places the company alongside other leading South African manufacturers that demonstrated exceptional forward thinking and operational advancement during the year. Defy Appliances was announced as the overall winner in the category, while Hydro Power Equipment was also shortlisted.

The commendation was presented at a ceremony held at the Radisson Hotel in Kempton Park on 20 November.

Vesconite Bearings’ submission centred on its integrated marketing and production strategy designed to support the manufacture and promotion of sliding bearings used in centreboards, daggerboards, retractable rudders and lifting keels. These components form a critical part of many performance-oriented vessels, where friction reduction, precision and reliability contribute directly to safety and hydrodynamic efficiency. The company’s engineering team and marketing division collaborated over several decades to establish a cohesive approach that links product development, production expansion and industry outreach.

A key aspect of the entry was a phased investment programme in multi-axis CNC machining technology. This included the introduction of 5-axis machining capability, which has allowed the company to substantially expand its capacity for manufacturing complex components. The addition of these machines has translated directly into several operational advantages for the marine market.

One of the most notable benefits is time savings. Complex profiles can now be machined in a single, uninterrupted cycle, which reduces overall cycle times, increases throughput and improves workshop efficiency.

Better staff utilisation has also been an important outcome. Operators no longer need to perform numerous manual setups on multi-stage jobs.

Superior quality is another major advantage associated with the new machining regime. The 5-axis technology enables parts to be completed in a single run, which ensures highly accurate tolerances and uniform surface finishes. These qualities are essential for marine guidance bearings.

The company’s recognition at the awards also reflects the effectiveness of its targeted marketing programme. Over the past several years, Vesconite Bearings has expanded its presence in global boating markets through focused outreach, content development and collaboration with vessel designers, yacht builders and performance teams. This effort has resulted in increased brand awareness and a growing preference for Vesconite materials among boatbuilders seeking durability, low-friction performance and long-term reliability.

This strategy has already achieved notable traction. Vesconite products have been selected for use in a high-performance catamaran associated with the America’s Cup arena, which represents one of the most demanding competitive sailing environments worldwide. The material has also been specified by several prominent catamaran builders, who require consistent bearing performance in both cruising and racing applications. These successes illustrate how the company’s investment in advanced machining capability aligns with the needs of OEMs that operate in a market where precision and dependability are essential.

The commendation from the SEIFSA Awards for Excellence reinforces Vesconite Bearings’ commitment to continuous improvement. It also highlights the company’s belief that effective innovation requires alignment between production technologies, skilled teams and proactive industry engagement. Vesconite Bearings will continue to refine its manufacturing processes, expand its capabilities and strengthen its relationships across the marine sector and other industries that rely on engineered bearings.
