Five-year dressing-roller life for food processing company
26 October 2026

A South African food-processing operation has achieved a five-year service life from Vesconite Bearings’ dressing rollers, dramatically reducing maintenance requirements and production downtime compared with the conventional nylon rollers previously used.

A dressing roller is a load-bearing conveyor roller used in hygienic overhead transport systems within food processing facilities. It enables suspended carriers to move smoothly through different stages of production while withstanding heavy loads, frequent cleaning, moisture and exposure to sanitising chemicals. Because these rollers operate continuously in demanding conditions, durability and reliability are critical to maintaining uninterrupted production.

Before changing to Vesconite Bearings’ solution, the operation was replacing its standard nylon dressing rollers every two months. The rollers wore unevenly, with one side of the wheel becoming progressively thinner during operation. Chunks of material would also chip away over time, affecting performance and reliability.

The company’s processing environment presented an additional challenge. The extremely cold operating conditions made the conventional nylon rollers brittle. When they came into contact with one another or with the floor during handling, they frequently cracked or broke.

As a result, the rollers needed regular replacement, and production was repeatedly interrupted while maintenance was carried out.

Looking for a more durable alternative, the company obtained a sample of a Vesconite Bearings dressing roller in 2019. Made from durable VescoPolycap with a low-friction Vesconite Hilube insert, the dressing roller was designed for smooth, lubrication-free operation and superior wear resistance.

The sample quickly demonstrated its value. Even before it reached the end of its service life, the performance prompted the company to order an additional 50 dressing rollers in 2020.

The original sample remained in service until 2024, providing approximately five years of reliable operation. The additional 50 dressing rollers, installed in 2020, were replaced during 2025, confirming a similar five-year operating life across the production line.

Compared with the two-month lifespan of the previous rollers, the improvement represented a substantial reduction in maintenance interventions and production stoppages.

Although the Vesconite Bearings dressing rollers had a slightly higher purchase price than conventional nylon products, the additional investment was quickly recouped through their significantly longer service life.

The reduction in replacement frequency also lowered maintenance costs while minimising costly production downtime. Rather than being an additional expense, the dressing rollers proved to be a cost-saving investment over their operating life.

Vesconite Bearings sales representative Yolanda Haasbroek says the product’s performance begins with the quality of the materials used in its manufacture.

“The dressing roller is manufactured from much higher quality base material than many products currently available on the market. It also incorporates a Vesconite Hilube insert that provides low-friction, lubrication-free operation,” she explains.

Haasbroek notes that the manufacturing process also contributes to the product’s durability.

“Unlike many moulded alternatives, our dressing rollers are precision-machined. This results in a thicker, stronger wheel that offers greater durability in demanding operating conditions.”

The Vesconite Hilube insert reduces friction during operation while eliminating the need for lubrication, making the rollers well-suited to food processing environments where cleanliness, reliability and low maintenance are essential.

The results demonstrate how selecting higher-quality engineered components can produce significant long-term operational benefits. By extending service life from two months to five years, the Vesconite Bearings dressing rollers have enabled the company to reduce maintenance, minimise production interruptions and lower its overall operating costs.

For manufacturers operating continuous production lines, where unplanned downtime can have a substantial financial impact, investing in durable, engineered solutions can deliver savings that far outweigh the initial purchase price.
