Case study - Vesconite Hilube Solves Graphite Breakage and Wear Problem

In liquid ring vaccuum pumps, Vesconite Hilube has solved the breakage and wear problem of the graphite faces in mechanical seals.

The original nominal 28 mm mechanical seal supplied with the pump incorporated a ceramic face running against a graphite face. The problem of breakages of the graphite face is a well known problem, including these vacuum pumps. Even if great care was taken when replacing and re-assembling a pump, a small error may lead to the breakage of the graphite face.

Vesconite Hilube was used to replace the rotational graphite face, and has proved most successful. Vesconite Hilube is a robust and tough material, not prone to breakages in this application.

Even more notable is the long life of Vesconite Hilube. So far it has outlasted graphite by a factor of six times. The graphite faces typically lasted four months before wearing down to the point where the mechanical seal had to be replaced. It is now two years on and the Vesconite Hilube is still running, doing its job as a seal for vacuum.

The pump, a liquid ring vacuum pump, is driven by a 4 kW motor and runs at 1480 rpm.

The Vesconite Hilube face must be greased with a light grease on initial assembly to assist with running in of the seal.
