Pressure Roller for Textile Mill A pressure roller on a warping machine used at a textile mill cracked. The roller, located behind the yarn bobbin, resembles a giant cotton reel. The roller was made from a phenolic material. The ends crack because the boss plate is frequently loosened and then tightened. In addition the roller is constantly under pressure against the yarn bobbin.
The roller had an outside diameter of 380 mm (15"), an inside diameter of 330 mm (13") and was 1,9 m (6.2') in length. VescoPlastics stock rollers in 3m (10') lengths, and in certain circumstances could supply longer lengths ex production. These rollers need to be replaced about every 2 to 3 years. Although not a wear application, it was decided to use Vesconite extra large bushing to replace the phenolic roller. Two main advantages in using Vesconite presented themselves. Firstly the delivery time from overseas is on average between 14 and 16 weeks. Local delivery of Vesconite is approximately 1 to 3 weeks. Considering the fact that when one of these rollers cracks, the whole production line stops, fast delivery is a great advantage. Secondly, Vesconite allowed for a great cost saving. The replacement which is imported from overseas, is naturally expensive. Using Vesconite as a roller resulted in a major saving, since the imported phenolic roller cost 2½ times as much. The Vesconite roller has been in successful operation for 20 months. It is still `as new' and it is estimated that it is good for at least another 20 months. Vesconite has performed so successfully as a roller that the textile mill has ordered a second length of Vesconite XL bushing for another warping machine. Advantages
