Vesconite Hilube for Cup Seals
on Oxygen and Nitrogen Compressors
Vesconite Hilube cup seals on oxygen and nitrogen compressors give a longer life than traditional PTFE seals. Cup seals were machined from 80 mm (3") diameter Vesconite Hilube rod for use in compressors that compress oxygen up to 3500 psi (250 bar). The old seals made from PTFE lasted 4-6 weeks, and caused excessive wear to the bore of the cylinder. Vesconite Hilube cup seals lasted up to 6 months with little or no wear on the bore. The Vesconite Hilube cup seals were also fitted to an upright water cooled B.O.C. 31F compressor, which was pumping air and nitrogen at 3800 psi (260 bar). In addition, Vesconite Hilube cup seals were fitted to an upright water cooled B.O.C. 17A compressor pumping nitrogen and oxygen at 2500 psi (170 bar). One could compare this application to a traditional bicycle pump as it works on the same principle. The use of Vesconite Hilube was first approved by Oxyco in the UK after testing for compatibility with oxygen and nitrogen, prior to using. A problem noted with the original material was that it tended to break up, blocking valves and pipes and caused excessive wear to the bore. Updated Aug 02 2002 |
