Brake Caliper Bushes for Winders
Brake calipers are found on the winder which
raises and lowers the cage in a mine shaft. The brake caliper uses ten to twelve
bushes.
Phosphor bronze is traditionally used for this application. Non destructive testing (NDT) of the pins has to be carried out every six months. To do this the bronze bushes have to be removed.
Vesconite bushes were installed and these allow for NDT without removing the bush. Greasing is easier and downtime is lessened.
The winder was stripped after a three year interval and the Vesconite bushes showed negligible wear.
