Vesconite Hatch Cover Bearing
Vesconite replaced the original nylon bearings used for the hatch cover bearings. When using nylon sufficient clearance has to be allowed since it will swell when it comes into contact with water or air humidity. This was not done on this ship. At times the hatchcovers could not be opened which caused delays in loading and unloading the cargo. Of course this characteristic of a bearing material cannot be allowed, and therefore Vesconite was fitted. Vesconite was chosen because it does not swell due to water. Now the hatchcovers can be opened under every kind of weather especially in rain!! Updated Oct 10 2002 |
